Movie Assignment- "The Natural"

` “The Natural”
The overriding theme of The Natural is redemption. One swing of the bat can make a goat into a hero or a hero into a goat, and the production of a lifetime can mean little compared to the success or failure in the clutch. Bill Buckner, who had a wonderful career, but will always be known for the ball that rolled between his legs during the 1986 Mets/Red Sox World Series and is still infamous in the Red Sox organization to this day. Then there’s Joe Carter, whose solid career was capped off with a World Series ending home-run that gave the Toronto Blue Jays the victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993. Even my personal favorite, when Aaron Boone, who has never had a steady career in any organization, hits a walk off home-run in game seven in the ALCS in the best rivalry in baseball between the Yankees and the Red Sox in 2003 in the bottom of the 11th inning. Redemption always has, and always will be a big part of baseball.. The Natural focuses on the redemption of Roy Hobbs, who figures out that he has something to prove. Earlier in the movie Roy says that when he walks down the street he wants to hear the people say "There goes Roy Hobbs, the greatest player who ever lived" And, as he rounds the bases amidst a shower of sparks in this scene shows that Roy has accomplished his goal and fulfilled his dream.

I connect to this scene because baseball is my life, as is Roy Hobbs. And ever since I have seen this movie I want the same goal he has, as I am walking down the road, “There goes Kenny Barrett, the greatest player who ever lived.” There many things I have learned about myself from this movie, one of them being, there is not anything that can stop me from reaching my goal, as Roy shows by overcoming being shot with a silver bullet by a woman who was on a mission to kill the “best” in every sport, how he overcame the after affects of what happened. Believe me, if something as amazing as this happened in real life, it would not ever be forgotten. I will never love or connect to another movie as I have with The Natural.
